MINNEAPOLIS - The Twins got the man they wanted in the opening round of baseball's first-year player draft. They selected Ohio State pitcher Alex Wimmers with the 21st overall selection, and expressed confidence that he'll soon sign his first professional contract.
Wimmers was a first-team all-American and Big Ten pitcher of the year for the past two seasons. This past year, the righthander won all nine of his decisions with 86 strikeouts and 23 walks. Scouting director Deron Johnson says Wimmers has a change-up similar to what Brad Radke threw while winning 148 games in twelve big-league seasons.
The Twins and Kansas City Royals start a three-game series tonight at Target Field. On the mound for the Twins is six-game winner Kevin Slowey, while reigning Cy Young Award winner Zach Greinke is the starter for Kansas City . The Twins have beaten the Royals four times in six meetings this season. Today's game is the first against the Twins for the Royals under new manager Ned Yost. He replaced Troy Hillman as Kansas City manager last month, and the Royals responded with 12 wins in 23 games.
The Twins lead the AL Central by three-and-a-half games over Detroit , who plays the White Sox in Chicago tonight.
