State sports briefs: Bucks make no promises when it comes to draft
Wisconsin Sports- The Milwaukee Bucks say they have not promised anyone that they’ll choose them in the first round of next Thursday’s NBA Draft. Scouting director Billy McKinney said the team wanted to make that clear, after a Memphis newspaper said forward Larry Sanders of Virginia Commonwealth “might have a promise” from Milwaukee that he’ll taken with the 15th pick.

McKinney said several agents and a couple of teams have asked the Bucks if they promised to draft a certain player at number-15. And the team says it’s not true. Last year, Milwaukee took point guard Brandon Jennings with the 10th selection in the first round. And McKinney said there was a lot of uncertainty before they pulled the trigger on draft night. Meanwhile, the Bucks continue to audition prospects for next week. Yesterday, they took a look at small forwards Quincy Pondexter of Washington, Damion James of Texas, and Devin Ebanks of West Virginia. All three are expected to go in the first round.

Former Buck Ray Allen failed to win his second NBA title in three years for Boston. The Celtics lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 83-79 last night in the seventh-and-deciding game of the Finals. Allen scored 13 points, and he only made 3-14 from the floor. The Lakers won their 16th title. Kobe Bryant was the Finals’ MVP. He has now won five titles in an LA uniform, tying him former Buck Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and five others for that distinction.

Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels is still in the running for a third straight Division-One girls state high school soccer title. The Dashers shut out Kenosha Bradford 1-0 yesterday in a quarter-final contest in Milwaukee. Rachel Koontz scored the game’s only goal in the 53rd minute. Divine Savior will now play Mequon Homestead tonight in the semi-finals. Homestead advanced with a 3-1 shootout over Waukesha West, after the teams played to a scoreless tie. Neenah will play Verona in tonight’s other semi-final, after both teams had shut-out victories yesterday. Neenah advanced by blanking Bay Port 3-0. And Verona shut out Wausau East 5-nothing. Semi-finals in Divisions-Two-and-Three will be played this afternoon. Defending Division-Two champ Madison Edgewood plays Grafton, and Appleton Xavier goes against Waukesha Catholic Memorial. In Division-Three, La Crosse Aquinas plays New Holstein. And Menasha Saint Mary's takes on Racine Prairie. Title games in all three divisions will be played tomorrow.

Jordan Elsen of Kenosha won the state golf association’s Match Play Championship yesterday. The former Wisconsin Badger defeated Ben Sieg of Osseo 1-up in the final match in Fond du Lac. Earlier in the day, Elsen defeated Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo of Burlington 1-up in the quarter-final round.
