State sports briefs: Bucks make no promises when it comes to draft

- The Milwaukee Bucks say they have not promised anyone that they’ll choose them in the first round of next Thursday’s NBA Draft. The Milwaukee Bucks say they have not promised anyone that they’ll choose them in the first round of next Thursday’s NBA Draft. Scouting director Billy McKinney said the team wanted to make that clear, after a Memphis newspaper said forward Larry Sanders of Virginia Commonwealth “might have a promise” from Milwaukee that he’ll taken with the 15th pick.

McKinney said several agents and a couple of teams have asked the Bucks if they promised to draft a certain player at number-15. And the team says it’s not true. Last year, Milwaukee took point guard Brandon Jennings with the 10th selection in the first round. And McKinney said there was a lot of uncertainty before they pulled the trigger on draft night. Meanwhile, the Bucks continue to audition prospects for next week. Yesterday, they took a look at small forwards Quincy Pondexter of Washington, Damion James of Texas, and Devin Ebanks of West Virginia. All three are expected to go in the first round.

Former Buck Ray Allen failed to win his second NBA title in three years for Boston. The Celtics lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 83-79 last night in the seventh-and-deciding game of the Finals. Allen scored 13 points, and he only made 3-14 from the floor. The Lakers won their 16th title. Kobe Bryant was the Finals’ MVP. He has now won five titles in an LA uniform, tying him former Buck Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and five others for that distinction.
