Bullpen lifts Twins over Blue Jays

Minnesota Sports
- Bullpen comes through for Twins as they out-slug the Blue Jays 7-6.

Three relievers combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings and Denard Span drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth to pace the Twins to a 7-6 win last night in Toronto.

The win keeps the Twins a half-game out in the AL Central behind first-place Detroit, who rallied for a 7-5 win over Baltimore in 11 innings. The Blue Jays scored four in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead when Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel hit back-to-back homers in the top of the sixth to bring the Twins even. Joe Mauer also homered before Span's single drove in Delmon Young to give the Twins the lead for good.

Jose Mijares, Jesse Crain and Jon Rauch picked up starter Carl Pavano by getting the last eight outs, with Mijares getting his first win and Rauch credited with his 19th save. The Twins and Jays play at Rogers Center again tonight in game two of the three-game series.
