Badgers hockey loses four players

Wisconsin Sports
- Badgers hockey loses four players for upcoming season to NHL.

The Wisconsin men's hockey team has lost four players for this fall to the pros.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh has signed a contract with the New York Rangers. That makes him the fifth member of last spring's national runner-up Badger team to join the NHL. Graduate Blake Geoffrion signed with the Nashville Predators.

The three under-classmen who signed are forward Derek Stepan with the Rangers, defenseman Brendan Smith with Detroit, and defenseman Cody Goloubef with Columbus.

McDonagh had one year of college eligibility left, and he would have captained the Badgers next season had he not turned pro. He finishes his Wisconsin career with 14 goals and 46 points in 119 career games.

McDonagh was first drafted in 2007 by the Montreal Canadiens, but his rights and six others were traded to New York last Wednesday.
