Ellsworth area WWII vet gets hero’s treatment on honor flight

HAGER CITY—Sixty-five years after being discharged from the Army, Donald R. Johnson of Hager City was part of a tribute to his and fellow World War II veterans’ military service last month.
Johnson was among those chosen for Honor Flight, a June 19 event which took them to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial and be recognized. They flew round trip from La Crosse, he said; on the plane with him were 108 other area vets plus 70 chaperones.
“They’re taking the World War II people first,” he said Friday about the two-year-old program expected to be extended to Korea and the wars since, “because we’re dying off at the rate of 1,000 per day.”
