$545 raised for cancer research in east end cafe

An East Ellsworth café does all it can to help the American Cancer Society in its fight against cancer.
Mary Ann Booth and patrons at the Broadway Café in East Ellsworth raised $545 this year to donate to the American Cancer Society. Booth started at the café and walked around East Ellsworth, taking donations from people who live and work in town.
Those who donated were able to get a paper shoe in their name hung up in the café for all to see.
This began after a regular customer to the café died from cancer last year, and an employee decided to do something to help those with cancer. Booth saw the restaurant doing this, and decided to take action as a well-known citizen in the area.
After last summer, those involved said they would like to sell more than before, and set the goal to pass their last year totals.
They did by more than 50, going from 198 sold last year to the 250 sold this year.
Booth’s secret? She is a good salesman.
“I would take five or 10 at a time, and walk around East Ellsworth,” said the 70-year-old.
In two days, Booth had sold almost $200 worth of shoes, well on the way to getting more donations than the year before.
Booth is not hard to find--she is proclaimed close to everyone with many friends by employees at the cafe. She is easy to spot, all you have to do is look for her yellow button, proclaiming her a “Sidewalk Superintendent.”
Her advice is simple, but can explain her enthusiasm for helping raise money to benefit cancer research.
“I live one day at a time,” she proclaimed.
Booth and the café intend to sell more next year, and are setting the goal to sell more than this year.
