Twins win eight straight in sweep of Mariners
Minnesota Sports- Twins win their eighth game in a row, sweeping the Mariners and keeping pace with the White Sox.
The Twins won their eighth game in a row yesterday, getting seven shutout innings from Francisco Liriano and a base-clearing double by Jason Kubel in a 4-0 win over Seattle at Target Field.
It was the second straight shutout for the Twins' pitching staff and ninth of the season. The win keeps the Twins a half-game behind first-place Chicago in the AL Central after the White Sox beat Oakland 4-1. Liriano allowed just two hits and tied a season high with 11 strikeouts, and has thrown 21 straight shutout innings. Kubel's three-run double in the sixth nearly cleared the right-center field wall and broke open a scoreless game.
He later came around to score on a hit by Danny Valencia, who now has a .388 batting average and appears to have won the starting third base job. The Twins open a four-game series tonight at Tampa Bay.
