Brewers win but Fielder hurts wrist

ST. LOUIS - Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman Prince Fielder insists that his left wrist is okay, after he hurt it in the ninth inning of yesterday’s 3-to-2 victory at Saint Louis.
Fielder bent the wrist backward while making a swipe tag on Randy Winn, after he caught a wide throw from shortstop Alcides Escobar. Fielder later made an error on a run-scoring grounder by Aaron Miles – but he insisted that the sore wrist had nothing to do with it. He said he misread the spin of the ball. Escobar left the game in the ninth with heat cramps in both legs.
The Brewers almost blew a two-run lead in the final inning, when the Cardinals hit two doubles and loaded the bases before Trevor Hoffman came in and struck out Brendan Ryan to end the game. It gave Hoffman his 598th career save, and Randy Wolf earned his third straight win. He gave up a run on three hits in eight-and-a-third innings, and improved his record to 10-9. Adam Wainwright lost his first home game in 12 decisions, despite striking out seven. He’s now 17-7 overall.
Lorenzo Cain doubled, tripled, scored twice, and drove in a run for Milwaukee – which swept the two-game set at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals have lost four straight, and they now trail Cincinnati by three games in the National League Central. The Brewers are off today, and will host San Diego tomorrow night.
