State sports briefs: Bucks Delfino leads Argentina to win in world championships

Milwaukee Bucks forward Carlos Delfino scored 22 points yesterday for his native Argentina, in a 91-70 rout of Angola at the World Basketball Championships.

Delfino also had five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in his starting role. Argentina and the U-S both improved to 3-and-0, as the Americans got by Brazil 70-to-68. Bucks’ forward Ersan Ilyasova plays for the tournament’s host nation, Turkey – and they’ll play Greece today.

Steve Stricker of Madison remains at number-four in the new World Golf Rankings. That’s after he tied for third at The Barclays tournament over the weekend, and he remained second in the Fed-Ex point standings after the first-of-four events in the playoffs. Appleton native J.P. Hayes, who tied for 27th at the Barclays, was rewarded nicely for making it to the next round of the Fed-Ex Playoffs. Hayes, a part-timer on the PGA Tour this season, moved up 16 spots in the World Rankings to 193rd. Jerry Kelly of Madison, who barely missed advancing to the second round, fell five spots in the world to 112th. Tiger Woods is still number-one, with Phil Mickelson second and Lee Westwood third.

The UW-Green Bay women’s soccer team is 1-1-1, after shutting out North Dakota on the road 2-0. Laura Hamer and freshman Anna Kouba scored for UWGB, and freshman Hekla Palmadottir had assists on both goals.

The head soccer coach at Madison Edgewood College will have a chance tomorrow night to accomplish a rare feat. Tim Alexander will try to become the fifth coach in NCAA history to win both 200 career men’s games and 200 women’s contests. Both Edgewood teams will host Ripon College – and the men’s team only needs one victory to give Alexander 200 career wins in just over 20 seasons. He’s also entering his 18th year as the Edgewood women’s coach – and that squad has won 230 games during his tenure.

Dominican is the coaches’ pre-season favorite to win its fifth straight Northern Athletics Conference men’s soccer title. Dominican has won four consecutive regular season crowns and league tournaments. And they went 19-2-3 overall last fall. Concordia-Mequon is second in the pre-season poll, followed by Madison Edgewood and Aurora. On the women’s side, Aurora is the coaches’ pick to win its fifth straight NAC regular season crown. The Spartans have also won three-of-four league tourneys. Dominican is picked to take second, followed by Concordia-Mequon and Edgewood.
