Packers audition Smith as kick returner
Wisconsin Sports-- Free agent kick returner Clifton Smith auditioned for the Green Bay Packers yesterday
GREEN BAY - Free agent kick returner Clifton Smith auditioned for the Green Bay Packers yesterday.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2008 with Tampa Bay. But he suffered two concussions last season. And the Buccaneers released Smith on Sunday after he had knee pain that turned out to be gout. Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy said the 25-year-old Smith was given medical tests, but he was not sure what the results were.
In the last two seasons, he returned 67 kickoffs for an average of 28-point-three yards, and he ran back 46 punts for an average of 12-point-one yards. Last November, Smith returned a kickoff 83 yards in Tampa’s three-point upset of Green Bay.
The Packer players were off yesterday, and they’ll return to practice today as they get ready for their regular season opener on Sunday at Philadelphia.
