Panthers miss out on chance at dual meet win vs. Amery
A chance for a dual meet victory came and went last week for the Ellsworth High School girls’ tennis team. But there were other small successes the Panthers could point to despite their winless record.
A chance for a dual meet victory came and went last week for the Ellsworth High School girls’ tennis team.
But there were other small successes the Panthers could point to despite their winless record.
The Panthers lost two three-set matches and several close calls in a 5-2 loss at Amery last Thursday.
EHS’ Stacie Peterson won in straight sets at No. 2 singles 6-3, 7-5 over Laura Satterlund the Panthers’ recorded their first doubles win of the season at No. 3. The team of Jessica Gergen and Kaity Kurrelmeyer won easily over the Warriors’ Shawna Henke and Anna Peterson 6-0, 6-1.
“We shuffled up our line-up and the like the results,” Panther head coach Charysse Minder said. “We got a doubles win at No. 3, we were very competitive at No. 2 and I believe Sarah Langer is going to do very well and No. 4 singles for us. She didn’t win but she played very well.”
Langer lost 2-6, 4-6 to Amery’s Hannah Nelson on Thursday but came back to beat her Saturday at the Baldwin-Woodville Invitational.
Langer won a three-set tie-breaker 12-10 after winning the first set 7-5 but losing the second 4-6.
Langer finished second in the Invite in No. 4 singles. Also placing were Tiffany Weiss, third at No. 1 singles after beating Phillips’ Molly Flessert 6-2, 6-2 in the third place match while Bethany Olson place second in No. 3 singles, losing a three-set tie-breaker 10-3 to B-W’s Mallory Custer. She won the first set 6-4.
Olson also had to win in three set over Connie Schuh of Phllips 6-4, 0-6, 10-2.
Doubles wins continued for Ellsworth’s as the Purple’s No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams both finished second at B-W.
The No. 2 team of Brooke Hines and Cassy Snoeyenbos 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 over Phillips’ Emily Schoenberg and Ericka Haubert before losing in the finals to the Balckhawks’ Danielle Mundt and Abbie Gadbois 6-1, 6-1. Kurrelmeyer and Jordan Olson beat Henke and Peterson 6-2, 6-2 but lost in the finals 1-6, 4-6 to B-W’s Laura Doornik and Kylee Kulow.
Ellsworth scored nine points in the meet, good for third place. The host ‘Hawks were first with 26 points, Amery had 11 while Phillips brought up the rear with three points.
Finishing up the Amery meet, Olson lost in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 1-6 to Amery’s Abby Marquand while Snoeyenbos and Hines also lost in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 4-6 to the Warriors’ Katie Peterson and Olivie Sjogren. Weiss also lost a close match, 5-7, 4-6 to Emily Von Blaircom, who won the No. 1 singles title at B-W.
Ellsworth lost 7-0 at New Richmond last Tuesday. This past Tuesday they fell at Unity-Luck 6-1. This Thursday the Panthers are at Baldwin-Woodville.
Next week be even busier. Ellsworth plays at Durand Tuesday, at Bloomer Thursday and plays in the Cannon Falls, Minn. Tournament Saturday. Meet times at 4:15 p.m. for the dual meets and 9 a.m. for the tournament.
