Brewers can play spoilers to NL West leading Giants in weekend series

- The San Francisco Giants will try to hang onto first place in the National League West this weekend when they host the Milwaukee Brewers.

SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco Giants will try to hang onto first place in the National League West thsi weekend when they host the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Giants took the division lead for the first time since May sixth, when they crushed the LA Dodgers 10-to-2 last night. The Giants have won 11-of-their-last-15, while the Brewers lost two-of-three at Houston this week. Milwaukee is coming off a 10-inning victory on Wednesday, when September call-up Mat Gamel doubled home the winning run. The Brewers are 11 games below .500 and 15 in back of division-leading Cincinnati in the National League central. Milwaukee was swept by the Giants by four games in July at Miller Park, in which the Brew Crew was out-scored 36-7. Left-hander Randy Wolf goes for the Brewers tonight against rookie left-hander Madison Bumgarner.

The Brewers’ rookie team has won its first Pioneer League championship since 1996. The Helena Brewers crushed the Ogden Raptors 14-2 last night, to sweep the best-of-three league finals. Designated hitter Cody Hawn homered twice and had a season-high eight RBI’s. He was Milwaukee’s sixth-round draft pick in June from the University of Tennessee. Hawn led the Helena team with 13 homers in 65 games, and he tied for the league RBI title with 61.
