Wisconsin dairy cows made more milk in August than a year ago -- but the increase is not as much as it was nationally.
The Badger State produced almost two-point-two billion pounds of milk last month, a half-percent more than in August of 2009. But the nationwide increase was 2.7 percent. And the 23 major dairy states had a boost of two-point-eight percent.
California, the nation's top milk producer, has had a resurgence lately. The Golden State boosted its August production by four-point-nine percent from the year before, to around 3.4 billion pounds.
Wisconsin's dairy herd grew by six-thousand cows from a year ago, and the average production per cow held steady at 1,730. Nationally, the number of cows declined by nine-thousand from July of this year. U.S. production per cow was 34 pounds less than the previous month -- and it was the lowest since February, due mainly to the summer heat.
