U to retire Bobby Bell's number during Homecoming game

- The University of Minnesota announced it will retire the No. 78 football jersey worn by former all-America defensive lineman Bobby Bell.

(Minneapolis, MN) -- The University of Minnesota announced it will retire the No. 78 football jersey worn by former all-America defensive lineman Bobby Bell.

A ceremony will take place during Minnesota's Homecoming game against Northwestern on October 2nd. Bell helped lead the Gophers to the 1960 national title and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. Bell went on to a Pro Football Hall of Fame career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bell's No. 78 will join that of Bronko Nagurski (72), Bruce Smith (54), Paul Giel (10) and Sandy Stephens (15) on TCF Stadium facde.

The current Golden Gopher grids will look to break a two-game losing streak vs. Northern Illinois Saturday. Kick-off is at 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network
