EHS boys' win own invite, SV's Colbenson wins girls race

Ellsworth High School's boys' cross country team and Spring Valley's Breanna Colbenson were champions at the Ellsworth Invitational cross country meet Tuesday afternoon.
The Panther boys won the team title with 61 points ahead of Prescott's 75 and Durand's 78. Ellsworth placed five runners in the top 25 led by Jaylen Pavloski, third in 17:41; Ike Taplin, ninth in 18:12; Matt Priest, 10th in 18:14; Sam Mahaffey, 14th in 18:47 and Isaac Benck, 25th in 19:31.
Ellsworth's boys won their first Ellsworth Invitational meet since 2002.
Colbenson easily won the girls' race in 15:49. Prescott's Victoria Simones was second in 16:22 and Ellsworth's Kennedy Kowalchyk finished fourth in 17:04. Ellsworth's Becca Matzek also medaled by finishing sixth in 17:47.
Prescott's Cole Hauenstein placed second in the boys' meet in a time of 17:39. Teammate Matt Pechacek was second in 18:04, Zach Sobolewski was 12th in 19:17 and Nick Helberg finished 19th in 19:17.
Spring Valley placed ninth in the boys meet out of 10 teams with 226 points. Lance Snyder was the Cardinals' top finisher in 19th at 19:04.
EHS' girls finished second with 61 points followed by Prescott with 89. Spring Valley was fifth with 122 points. Osceola won the meet title with 37 points. They placed all of their scoring runners in the top 10.
