State Sports Briefs: UW women's soccer upsets No. 15 Minnesota
Wisconsin Sports-- The Wisconsin women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games last night, with a 1-nothing victory at Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS - The Wisconsin women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games last night, with a 1-nothing victory at Minnesota.
Alev Kelter scored the game-winner in the 81st minute, as the Badgers ended Minnesota’s 11-game unbeaten streak. The 15th-ranked Gophers fell to 9-2-2 overall, and 1-1-1 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin improved to 2-0-1 in the conference, and 5-3-3 overall. The Badgers now have seven straight shutouts.

UW Whitewater won its WIAC football opener last night, with a 49-17 rout at Platteville. The top-ranked Warhawks won their 19th straight game. Platteville had a 10-7 lead late in the second quarter when Whitewater scored on an 80-yard drive and never looked back. Levell Coppage ran for 134 yards. Quarterback Matt Blanchard threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns for the Warhawks. Platteville was held to minus-12 rushing yards, as it dropped to 2-2 overall. Whitewater is now 4-0.

The UW-Green Bay volleyball team blanked Chicago State at home last night, three-games-to-none. Brittany Groth had 19 digs, and Whitney Schott had 33 assists as Green Bay improved to 5-11 overall.

Carroll University of Waukesha is going for its second straight Midwest Conference women’s golf title this weekend. The league tournament begins this morning in Rockford, Illinois and it runs through Sunday. Carroll won its first championship in school history in 2009, beating Grinnell by 31 strokes. The team titlist will represent the conference at the NCAA Division-Three tournament next May in Florida. Angelina Parrinello of Carroll is back to defend the individual crown she won a year ago.
