UW women's top Bemidji State, men lose to Boston U

-- UW women's hockey team whipped Bemidji State 7-1 but the men's team lost its opener in the Ice Breaker Tournament in St. Louis 4-3 to Boston U.

Bemidji State scored first, but things got ugly after that. The Wisconsin women's hockey team ripped off seven goals in a row, whipping up the home crowd in the Kohl Center with a 7-1 victory. The Beavers were sitting pretty after the first period, but that's when it all came apart. A goal from Hilary Knight started a four-game period for Wisconsin. Carolyn Prevost had a hat trick in the game, while U.S. Olympic players Knight and Meghan Duggan each had a goal and an assist. The two teams take today off, then wrap up the two-game series tomorrow after at 2:07 p.m.

The Wisconsin men's hockey team jumped to an early 2-0 lead on power play goals by Derek Lee and Ryan Little, but couldn't hold that lead. Boston University rally past the Badgers for a 4-3 victory in the first round of the Ice Breaker tournament in St. Louis. Scott Gudmandson had 28 saves for Wisconsin. Jordy Murray had a goal and an assist in the loss. Joe Pereira's second goal of the game was decider. It came with a little less than three minutes to go in the season-opener. An apparent goal by UW with a minute left was disallowed in a controversial decision.
