State sports briefs: State individual tennis meet begins today
The state girls’ high school individual tennis tournament begins today in Madison at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Two-time defending champion Aly Coran of Mequon Homestead is the top seed in Division-One singles’ play.
MADISON - The state girls’ high school individual tennis tournament begins today in Madison at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Two-time defending champion Aly Coran of Mequon Homestead is the top seed in Division-One singles’ play.
The junior lost the only match of her prep career this season, and she comes in at 26-1. Tara Robey and Sarah Woods of Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels are back to defend their Division-One doubles’ crown. They have the number-two seed this time around. In Division-Two, defending singles champ Shannon Etten of Appleton Xavier comes in at 29-0. There will be a new winner in Division-Two doubles. Katie Pott and Christina Schaupp of Green Bay Notre Dame have the top-seed, after placing fifth a year ago. The state tournament runs through Saturday.

The Milwaukee Bucks will play an exhibition game at Washington tonight. Among other things, the Bucks are trying to figure out who their back-up center will be. Coach Scott Skiles says the question will be answered during the team’s five remaining pre-season contests. Both Andrew Bogut and one of the possible back-ups, Jon Brockman, will sit out tonight’s game. Bogut is still getting over the April injuries to his right hand, wrist, and elbow. Brockman sprained his left ankle last Friday night at Detroit. Power forward Drew Gooden has had plenty of experience at center – but Skiles has not played him very much at that spot, because he knows what Gooden can do there. Rookie forward Larry Sanders can also provide some needed minutes in the post. And veteran Brian Skinner is still trying to win a roster spot in the middle.

Wisconsin junior Carolyne Prevost has been named the WCHA’s offensive hockey player-of-the-week. She scored four goals when the Badger women swept Bemidji State at home last weekend. Prevost had a team-high 11 shots over the weekend in which she scored a hat-trick, two game-winners, a short-handed goal, and a power play scoring strike. Goal-tender Stephanie Ney of North Dakota is the league’s player-of-the-week on defense. Goal-tender Lisa Steffes of Ohio State is the week’s top rookie.

Curran Carlile of Lawrence University in Appleton has been named the Midwest Conference men’s cross country runner-of-the-week. Carlile, a freshman, took first at the Gene Davis Invitational hosted by Lawrence last weekend. Mary Kate Beyer of Monmouth was named the top women’s runner. Also, the Midwest Conference recognized Jennifer Roesch of Lawrence in women’s tennis, and Woodruff native Alyson Schroeter of Monmouth in volleyball.
