MADISON - The state DNR has delayed public hearings on the declaring of four cave bats as threatened species, while more rules are considered to protect those bats.
The hearings were supposed to be held next week. But on October 27th, the Natural Resources Board will act on additional temporary rules aimed at stopping the spread of white-nose syndrome – a disease that’s killing thousands-of-bats elsewhere. The rules would require the de-contamination of clothing and gear used in caves. It would also restrict certain out-of-state equipment from being used in Wisconsin caves.
The DNR wants all of the permanent bat protection rules to be considered in one package. So it’s delaying the hearings on the threatened species designations until late November. That measure also declares white-nose syndrome as an invasive species.
