McGehee named Brewers' MVP by baseball writers

-- Casey McGehee has been named the Milwaukee Brewers’ MVP for this season.

MILWAUKEE - Casey McGehee has been named the Milwaukee Brewers’ MVP for this season.

The local chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association chose the second-year third baseman, after he hit .285 with 23 homers and 104 runs driven in. McGehee led the Brewers in RBI’s, and was sixth in the National League in that department. He also broke a team record with 102 RBI’s in games in which he played third base. McGehee also ranked ninth in the NL in hits with 174, and 10th in doubles with 38. Rickie Weeks finished second in the team MVP voting, and Corey Hart was third.

The writers chose Yovani Gallardo as Milwaukee’s most valuable pitcher. He went 14-and-7 with a three-point-eight-four ERA, and was named to his first All-Star Game. Gallardo also joined Teddy Higuera as the only Brewers to have back-to-back seasons with 200 strikeouts or more. Higuera did it in 1986-and-’87.
