On field and off, Favre an ailing quarterback

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. - Brett Favre will not be the same when he returns to Green Bay to face the Packers on Sunday night. The 41-year-old quarterback has taken some big hits in Minnesota’s first five games, in which a potential Super Bowl contender has stumbled to a 2-3 start.

Favre looked like the fountain of youth in 2009, when he and the Vikings swept his old Packer team and came within one game of reaching the Super Bowl. Now, Favre is fighting off tendinitis in his throwing elbow. He had a cortisone shot last week which lessened the pain, but he can’t get another shot this soon.

For years, Favre has said the mental stress of football is a lot harder to deal with than the physical pain. But he recovered slower than expected from ankle surgery in the spring – and it’s partially why Favre waited until mid-August to return to the Vikings.

On Sunday night, he’ll face a banged-up but fired-up Packer team which could bring back two fresh playmakers for the first time this season – corner Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby. Also, linebacker Clay Matthews could return after missing last Sunday’s loss to Miami with a bad hamstring. Harris and Bigby will practice tomorrow, after spending the first six weeks of the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
