GREEN BAY - The UW-Green Bay men’s basketball team beat Division-Three Madison Edgewood 78-to-55 at home last night in their only exhibition game.

The Phoenix didn’t pull ahead until late in the first half, when they had a 20-5 run to go up by 14 at the break. Freshman center Alec Brown had 17 points and five rebounds for Green Bay, which out-scored Edgewood 38-to-14 in the paint and a 40-to-30 rebounding edge. Ben Wisniewski had 17 points to lead Madison Edgewood. Green Bay and its new coach Todd Wardle will play its regular season opener on Saturday at home against Minnesota-Duluth.

The University of Wisconsin men's basketball team have seven front-court players who are 6-8 or taller. But the question is whether they’ll have a reliable point guard to feed the ball to them. Jordan Taylor said he was looking to move into that spot. He would replace Trevon Hughes who departed after season along with backcourt partner Jason Bohannon. The Badgers return 60-percent of their scoring and 75-percent of their rebounding from a team that went 24-9 a year ago and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Taylor said he learned a lot from Hughes and Bohannon, and he said everyone on the Badgers is competitive. Forward Jon Leuer is one of six seniors on the team – and he says they want to go out the “right way” and make the most of their final year. Leuer spent most of his summer with USA Basketball, working out with the pros as they got ready for the World Championships. The Badgers will play their second-and-final exhibition tomorrow night at home against Minnesota State-Mankato.

The Milwaukee Bucks will host the New York Knicks tonight. The Bucks are 2-5 in the early going, and a big reason is their poor shooting. They’re only hitting 39-point-nine percent of their shots from the floor, second-to-last among the 30 NBA teams. And the Bucks are only scoring 89-point-six points a game, the lowest in the league. Coach Scott Skiles said his players are pressing too much at times, and they’ve been turning down some open shots in the last few games. He says the Bucks need to get more efficient at what they’re doing, get a smoother rhythm on the floor, and shoot when they’re open. Center Andrew Bogut is the only starter shooting above 40-percent. He’s at 51-point-four. Tonight, Milwaukee will face a high-scoring Knicks’ team that averages just under 104 points a game. New York comes in at 3-3. Bucks’ forward Carlos Delfino missed yesterday’s practice with a neck strain suffered in Saturday’s night’s loss to New Orleans. But Delfino is considered “probable” for tonight’s contest.

Three Wisconsin teams will square off each other in the opening round of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament. Marquette will host four teams in the first-round. The Badgers and UW-Milwaukee will play each other on Friday, followed by Marquette against Central Michigan. The two winners will advance to the second round on Sunday. Wisconsin recovered from a winless start in its first five games to go 10-4-4 this season. UW-Milwaukee is 12-6-2, led by two-time Horizon League player-of-the-year Sarah Hagen. Marquette went 11-0 in the Big East, and is 15-4-2 overall. They’ll play a Central Michigan team that won the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Chippewas have a five-game winning streak and a mark of 16-4-1.

UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay have two players each on the All-Horizon League men’s soccer first team. Green Bay mid-fielders J.C Banks and Tony Walls received the honors yesterday, along with Milwaukee defenseman Greg Rosenthal and midfielder-and-forward Andrew Wiedabach. David Prochazka and Scott Raymonds of Green Bay made the all-league second team. Sam Krenzien and David Bernhardsson of Green Bay were named to the all-newcomer team, along with Milwaukee’s Robbie Boyd. Ben Sippola of Butler edged out Green Bay’s Banks for the league’s player-of-the-year award. The Horizon League tournament begins today. Sixth-seeded Milwaukee will play at number-three Loyola tonight in the first round. Second-seeded Green Bay has a bye until Friday’s semi-finals.
