MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer won his third consecutive Gold Glove award yesterday. The award is given to the best defensive player at each position based on a vote of league managers and coaches.
Mauer caught 951-and-two-thirds-innings in 2010 and was tied for the Major League lead with a .996 fielding percentage, committing only three errors all season. He threw out 15 of 68 base runners attempting to steal. This is the 41st time a Twins player has won the award.
Mauer becomes the fifth Twin to win the award at least three times. He joins pitcher Jim Kaat, who won 11 Gold Gloves; outfielder Torii Hunter, who earned seven; outfielder Kirby Pucket, who won six, and third baseman Gary Gaeti took home four.
