Shields to main kick-off returner for Pack

Wisconsin Sports
-- Rookie corner Sam Shields will be the Green Bay Packers’ main kickoff returner on Sunday at Minnesota. Special teams’ coach Shawn Slocum says he might use Jordy Nelson and Pat Lee in that spot as well. But Shields practically won the job two weeks ago when he returned a kick 49 yards in Green Bay’s home victory over Dallas.

GREEN BAY - Rookie corner Sam Shields will be the Green Bay Packers’ main kickoff returner on Sunday at Minnesota. Special teams’ coach Shawn Slocum says he might use Jordy Nelson and Pat Lee in that spot as well. But Shields practically won the job two weeks ago when he returned a kick 49 yards in Green Bay’s home victory over Dallas.

Shields has excellent speed, with a time of four-point-two-eight seconds in the 40-yard dash. Against the Vikings, he’ll have a smooth Metrodome surface to run on – and he should get at least one good chance to break a return, since Minnesota kicker Ryan Longwell reaches the end zone just 25-percent of the time. Shields had trouble catching the ball early on, but Slocum says he’s gotten better with practice. Also, Slocum is not ruling out the possibility of using Shields as a punt returner, in the spot now held by Tramon Williams.

Meanwhile, fullback Korey Hall and center Scott Wells were added to the Packers’ injury report yesterday. Hall’s back locked up at practice, and his playing status for Sunday is uncertain. Wells had a foot problem.
