Marquette makes it close but No.1 Duke wins 82-77
Wisconsin Sports-- The Marquette University men’s basketball team lost to top-ranked Duke 82-to-77 last night in the semi-finals of the CBE Classic in Kansas City.
KANSAS CITY - The Marquette University men’s basketball team lost to top-ranked Duke 82-to-77 last night in the semi-finals of the CBE Classic in Kansas City.
It almost looked like it was going to be a rout from the beginning, as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 23-9 lead. They led by nine at the half, but Marquette caught up after the intermission. The game was tied with just under 10-and-a-half minutes left, but Duke pulled away with a 13-2 run – and the Golden Eagles got no closer than seven after that.
The Blue Devils out-shot Marquette 55-to-44 percent. But the Eagles shot 53-percent in the second half which featured their comeback effort. Four Duke players scored in double figures. Mason Plumlee had 25 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots as Duke improved to 4-0. Jimmy Butler scored 22 for Marquette, which dropped to 1-7 lifetime against number-one teams. The Eagles are 4-1 overall, and will play Gonzaga tonight in a tournament consolation game.
