Marquette comeback too late, lose to Gonzaga 66-63

-- A late comeback effort fell short last night, as the Marquette men’s basketball team lost to Gonzaga 66-to-63 at the CBE Classic in Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY - A late comeback effort fell short last night, as the Marquette men’s basketball team lost to Gonzaga 66-to-63 at the CBE Classic in Kansas City.

The Golden Eagles were down by 10 with just over 15 minutes left. They got to within three with 1:13 to go, but couldn’t get any closer. Gonzaga, which is ranked 22nd, shot 64-percent in the first half and 43-percent for the game. Marquette only shot 39-percent for the night.

Jimmy Butler led the Eagles with 22 points, all but five in the second half. Steven Gray led Gonzaga with 20 – including five three-pointers in the opening half. The Bulldogs improved to 3-2 – and they avoided their first three-game losing streak since 2008. Marquette has lost two straight – both to nationally-ranked teams, after they fell to top-ranked Duke on Monday night. The Golden Eagles are 4-2, and will play at UW Milwaukee on Saturday.
