ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team blew an 11-point second-half lead, and lost to Notre Dame 58-51 last night in the title game of the Old Spice Classic near Orlando.
The Fighting Irish outscored the Badgers 26-8 in the final nine-plus minutes to remain undefeated so far this season. Tim Abromaitis put the Irish in front on a comebacker with 2:01 left. Notre Dame switched from a 2-3 zone to a man-to-man defense in the latter portion of the second half. Also, Badgers’ coach Bo Ryan said the Irish offense was aggressive, and many of their baskets came without assists. Both teams shot just over 35-percent for the game.
Four Notre Dame players scored in double figures, led by Eric Atkins and Carleton Scott with 12 points each. Abromaitis had 10 points and nine rebounds, and was named the tournament MVP. Jon Leuer had 19 points and five rebounds to lead Wisconsin, and he was named to the all-tournament squad.
Notre Dame is now 7-0. Wisconsin dropped to 4-2. They’ll host North Carolina State on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
