Afternoon State News Briefs: Shalala named to NFF Board of Directors

Former UW-Madison chancellor Donna Shalala has been named to the National Football Foundation’s board-of-directors.

Shalala ran the state’s flagship university in the 1980’s-and-‘90’s. She was praised for her hirings of now-retired athletic director Pat Richter and current AD Barry Alvarez – who coached the Badger football team to national prominence and three Rose Bowl victories. Shalala was President Bill Clinton’s health secretary in the ‘90’s. And she’s now the president of the University of Miami. Also named to the Football Foundation’s board was former Dallas Cowboys’ star quarterback Roger Staubach. Among other things, the foundation runs the College Hall-of-Fame – in which Alvarez was inducted earlier this year.

Shalala will be looking for a new head football coach at Miami after Randy Shannon was fired over the weekend.

Until the last couple games, the Milwaukee Bucks have done a fairly good job of rebounding. The Bucks had more boards than their opponents in eight straight contests until last Saturday – when the Charlotte Bobcats out-rebounded Milwaukee 37-32 in a Bucks’ victory. Last night at Utah, Milwaukee was dominated on the boards 48-26, as they played a second straight game without top rebounders Drew Gooden and Andrew Bogut. Bogut did not make the trip out West. Gooden did, but he didn’t play because he’s still coming off a knee injury. Milwaukee led the NBA before last night’s Jazz loss in the percentage of available rebounds it snares in a game, at 53-point-four percent. The Bucks had also led the league by getting almost 79-percent of its defensive rebound opportunities. But poor shooting, defense, and injuries have plagued Milwaukee this season. The Bucks are 6-11, going into their next game at Denver tomorrow night.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team rose one place to 15th in the new poll from U.S College Hockey Online. The Badgers are 7-6-3 after tying 11th-ranked Michigan at four and beating Michigan State 4-1 in last weekend’s College Hockey Showcase in Madison. Minnesota-Duluth remains at number-one, and Boston University is still second.

Meanwhile, the Badger women’s hockey team fell from the top spot in the College On-line poll. They dropped to second after splitting a weekend series with Minnesota-Duluth, which is tied for third in the new poll. Cornell is the new number-one, moving up one place from last week.

In Division-Three, Saint Norbert moves up one place to second in the College On-line men’s poll. Oswego moved up one spot to become the new number-one. Norwich dropped from first-to-third. The Milwaukee School of Engineering jumped two spots to 11th, and UW-Stout also rose two places to 13th. In the D-Three women’s poll, the Rochester Institute of Technology moved up two spots to number-one this week. UW-River Falls remains at number-six. Stevens Point went up one spot to ninth.

Eric Hostetter of UW-Stout and Dana Churchill of La Crosse are WIAC men’s-and-women’s basketball players-of-the-week. Hostetter, a senior guard, averaged 24 points and over six rebounds in three games for Stout last week. He shot 54-percent from the floor. Churchill, a senior forward, averaged 17 points and almost 10 rebounds in three La Crosse victories. She hit 57-percent of her shots.
