MILWAUKEE - Hank Raymonds died this morning. The former Marquette men’s basketball coach won 126 games after he helped Al McGuire lead the team to a national championship in 1977. Raymonds died at age 86 after a long bout with cancer.
He joined the staff at Marquette in 1961, and was coach Eddie Hickey’s assistant for three years until McGuire was hired in 1964. Raymonds spent the next 13 years until McGuire as the number-one assistant until the legendary coach retired in the weeks after Marquette won the NCAA Tournament. Raymonds succeeded McGuire, and spent six years as the head coach until Rick Majerus replaced him in 1983. As eloquent and flamboyant as McGuire was, Raymonds was low-key. George Thompson, who played for Raymonds, said his coach was quote, “content to turn out decent ball-players and better people.” Thompson said Raymonds took great pride in seeing his players contribute to society – and either stay in Milwaukee or return there and be a part of the community. He’s a member of several halls-of-fame, including the Wisconsin Athletic Hall in Milwaukee. Hank Raymonds lived in Wauwatosa for many years, and is survived by his wife Jinny, five children, and 14 grand-children.

The Milwaukee Brewers were already wheeling-and-dealing before baseball’s Winter Meetings began near Orlando – and apparently, they kept going. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said it caught wind of three rumors. One is that the Atlanta Braves are interested in trading a pitcher for Brewers center-fielder Lorenzo Cain. And there were reports that the Brewers inquired about free-agent reliever Koji Uehara from Baltimore and Los Angeles Dodgers’ first baseman James Loney. But Fox Sports said Milwaukee would not be interested in picking up Loney if they don’t trade Prince Fielder – who has one more season before he apparently strikes gold as a free agent. Yesterday, the Brewers traded second base prospect Brett Lawrie to Toronto for starter Shaun Marcum – a deal that won’t be official until both pass physicals with their new teams.

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team remains at number-two in the new poll this afternoon from U.S. College Hockey Online. The Badgers swept a two-game series at ninth-ranked North Dakota this past weekend. It raised Wisconsin’s record to 14-2 overall. Cornell, at 13-1, remains at number-one after ousting the formerly top-ranked Badgers a week ago.

Jon Leuer, a forward for the Wisconsin Badgers, was named the Big Ten Player of the Week. He averaged 25-points and 10-rebounds per game in wins over North Carolina State and South Dakota last week. The senior recorded a double-double against the Wolfback and a career-high 29-points against the Coyotes. This is the second time he's been honored as a league player of the week, but the first this season. Ohio State's Jared Sullinger was named the conference's Freshman of the Week.

The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team won 68-44 at Eastern Michigan on the same day the Phoenix made the AP Top-25 for the first time. Green Bay moved into the 23rd spot in the national media poll, after being 21st in the coaches’ survey last week. The Phoenix out-scored Eastern Michigan 40-to-14 in the first half – and they hung on to win despite making just 8-of-27 from the floor in the second half. Julie Wojta scored 20 for UW-Green Bay, which improved to 8-0. Eastern Michigan only shot 14-percent in the first half, but the Eagles got to within 16 in the second half before Green Bay pulled away at the end. Paige Redditt scored 12 for the Eagles, who dropped to 5-4. Green Bay will host Southeast Missouri on Friday night.

Scott Tolzien of Wisconsin has won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation’s top senior quarterback. He has the country’s best pass completion percentage at 74.3, with the fourth-highest passer rating at 169-point-eight. As he goes into the Rose Bowl, Tolzien is on pace to break the Badger record for completion percentage, set by Darrell Bevell in 1993. Tolzien has thrown for 2,300 this season with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He’s 21-4 as a starter the past two years, and he’s fourth all-time at Wisconsin with 5,112 passing yards and 398 completions. Tolzien will receive the Unitas Award on Friday in Baltimore. He beat out four other finalists – Andy Dalton of Texas Christian, Ricky Stanzi of Iowa, Colin Kaepernick of Nevada, and Christian Ponder of Florida State.

The University of Wisconsin football team has lost one of its recruits for next season. Corner Bennett Okotcha of Coppell, Texas has decided to go to Notre Dame, after he originally committed to Wisconsin. The word comes one day after Kenosha Bradford running back Melvin Gordon said he would play for the Badgers in 2011.
