RIVER FALLS - Sarah Vitale hit two free throws with two seconds to go in the game to give River Falls' girls basketball team a 53-51 home non-conference win over Ellsworth Tuesday.
It was Ellsworth's third loss to start the season and the third game in a row where fouls and free-throwing shooting made a key difference in the outcome. River Falls went 18-for-25 from the free-throw line.
Kayla Christopherson led Ellsworth with 15 points. Courtney Stoesz and Shannon Campbell each added nine.
The Panthers will try to secure their first win of the season Friday at home against St. Paul CHOF (Christ's Household of Faith).
In other girls' basketball contests involving Pierce County teams, Elmwood also dropped to 0-3 overall, losing 56-49 to Glenwood City while Spring Valley was beaten 42-23 by St. Croix Central.
