MILWAUKEE - Hundreds attended a funeral in Milwaukee yesterday for former Marquette men’s basketball coach Hank Raymonds. Over 50 of Raymonds’ former players went to the service, which was held on the Marquette campus.
They included Boston Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers, who said Raymonds constantly reminded his teams to “play hard and have fun.” Current Golden Eagles’ coach Buzz Williams said Raymonds’ message still rings true. He says it’s always fun for a team that trains and plays the right way. Relatives delivered eulogies at the service, which lasted for about an-hour-and-a-half. Raymonds died last week at age 86.

The UW-Green Bay women have dropped out of the AP Top-25 after just one week. The Phoenix were ranked 23rd a week ago – but they lost their first game of the season on Sunday at Marquette by three points. Green Bay is 9-and-1 – and they’re currently two spots away from AP listings. The Wisconsin men are nine spots away from the Top-25 in their AP poll, and three spots away in the coaches’ survey.

Dave Doeren will keep running the University of Wisconsin defense for the Rose Bowl – and then he’ll leave to become the new head coach at Northern Illinois. Doeren was named yesterday as the replacement for Jerry Kill, who left NIU to become the new coach at Minnesota. Badgers’ coach Bret Bielema said Doeren had opportunities a year ago, but he stayed. He was a part of Bielema’s first staff at the UW in 2006, and he became the defensive coordinator a year later. Bielema said all the defensive coaches were comfortable with letting Doeren run the Badger defense for the Rose Bowl on January first against TCU. Bielema said if he wasn’t so close to Doeren – or if he didn’t totally trust him – he wouldn’t Doeren stay around. But he says the Rose Bowl will be great way for him to end the season. Bielema says he’ll try to find his next defensive coordinator within the Badgers’ current staff, but he won’t make any commitments until after the season.

They added a game against San Diego on March 28th in Phoenix, to replace a contest that was canceled against Oakland. And the Brewers decided to leave early on their final day of spring training. They’ll start a game against San Diego at 12:05 on March 29th. All told, the Brewers will play 32 spring exhibitions. Seventeen will be at the Brewers’ spring complex at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix.
