GREEN BAY - The UW Green Bay men’s basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half last night to beat North Dakota at home, 72-68.
Freshman Alec Brown had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Phoenix. And he set a new school record with eight blocked shots. Green Bay trailed by 10 at the half, but they tied the game with just under nine minutes left. The lead went back-and-forth for the next five minutes, until the Phoenix went in front for good on a three-point play by Brown with 4:23 to go. Green Bay made 30-of-39 free throws, while North Dakota made just 11-of-22. Josh Schuler scored 22 for the Fighting Sioux, who dropped to 4-and-8. Green Bay improved to 5-7, and will play at Wyoming tomorrow night.

Craig Counsell says it’s a great time to be a Milwaukee Brewer. The 40-year-old infielder has just signed another one-year contract. He’ll get one-point-four million dollars as he begins his fifth season with Milwaukee. Counsell, a Whitefish Bay native, is entering his 16th year in the Majors. He says the addition of starters Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum will make the Brewers the best they’ve been during his time with the club. Counsell says it’s “definitely exciting,” and the organization has made a big commitment. General manager Doug Melvin says Counsell brings a “quiet leadership” to the Brewers – and he’s a solid back-up at second base, shortstop, and third. Counsell played in 102 games last season and started 35. He hit .230 with a pair of homers and 21 RBI’s – and he batted a solid .333 as a pinch-hitter.

Packers’ safety Nick Collins felt better yesterday, after leaving Sunday night’s loss at New England with a rib injury. Coach Mike McCarthy said the injury appears to be better than anticipated, and there’s a chance that Collins will play on Sunday against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field. Although the Packers have been eliminated from the division race, they can still get a playoff Wild Card by beating both the Giants and the Chicago Bears in their final two regular season contests. McCarthy says defensive end Cullen Jenkins could be ready for the Bears’ game, which is set for January second at Lambeau Field. Jenkins has been bothered by a calf injury since training camp. The coach also said linebacker Frank Zombo has a chance to return for the Giants’ game. He sat out the loss to the Patriots with a bad knee. And McCarthy had nothing new to report yesterday on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who suffered a concussion nine days ago at Detroit. He ended 45 consecutive starts when he sat out the New England contest. McCarthy says he’ll have more information tomorrow.
