Morning State Sports Briefs: UWGB women win final non-conference contest
Wisconsin Sports-- The UW-Green Bay women won their final non-conference tune-up last night, 70-53 at home over South Dakota.
GREEN BAY - The UW-Green Bay women won their final non-conference tune-up last night, 70-53 at home over South Dakota.
The Phoenix forced 15 turnovers in the first half and led by 19 at the break. They led by as many as 31 with just over 10 minutes left, but South Dakota rallied to get within 14 in the closing minutes. Green Bay forced a season-high 30 turnovers for the game, and they scored 32 points off those miscues. Amber Hegge scored a game-high 16 points for South Dakota, which fell to 8-7. Lydia Bauer scored 15 for Green Bay, which opens its Horizon League season on Friday night at home against Detroit.

The UW-Milwaukee women have lost six straight after falling at Illinois State 76-69. The Redbirds led most of the way, and were up by 16 points with 14 minutes left. The Panthers got to within four late, but Illinois State went on a 13-2 run to put the game away. Lindsay Laur had 20 points and 12 rebounds for UWM. Emily Hanley had 22 points and 11 boards for Illinois State, which improved to 7-3. Milwaukee fell to 3-8. They’ll host Wright State in their Horizon League opener on Friday afternoon. Tonight, the Marquette women will play Florida International at a holiday tournament in Miami.

The Milwaukee Admirals lost at home to Rockford last night, 4-1. Dylan Hunter scored the only goal for the Admirals, who gave up power play goals for only the second time in their last seven games. Mathis Olimb and Ben Smith both scored with the man-advantage for Rockford, which avenged a one-goal loss to Milwaukee last Sunday. The Admirals will host Houston tonight.

The United States Junior Hockey team cruised to a 6-1 win over Slovakia in the 2nd game of the preliminary round at the World Junior Championships yesterday in Buffalo. Three Minnesotans scored points yesterday in the win, Justin Faulk, Nick Leddy and Nick Bjugstad all had an assist in the easy victory for the Americans. Minnesotan Brock Nelson missed last nights game with an unduisclosed injury. Next up for the U.S. is Switzerland Friday night.

The Chicago Bears are not expected to give their key players a rest on Sunday at Green Bay, even though they clinched the number-two playoff spot in the NFC last night. The Bears received a first-round bye after the Minnesota Vikings upset the Eagles in Philadelphia, 24-to-14. The Bears still have a chance to win the top spot in the NFC and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. But they’d have to beat the Packers – New Orleans would have to lose to Tampa Bay – and Atlanta would have to fall to Carolina. Those last two games start at noon on Sunday, so the Bears should know by their 3:15 p.m. kickoff if they still have a shot at the NFC’s top spot. But regardless, Bears’ coach Lovie Smith says he’ll play hard against the Packers. He’d says he’d still like a 6-0 sweep of the NFC North – and sweeping Green Bay is a part of their regular season goals. The Packers would clinch the sixth-and-final playoff spot with a win over the Bears – or if Tampa Bay and the New York Giants both lose on Sunday. The Packers start practicing today for their regular season finale. If Green Bay makes the playoffs, they would be at Philadelphia on Wild Card Weekend. That’s because the Eagles clinched the third playoff spot with their loss to Minnesota.
