NASHVILLE - The Marquette men’s basketball team lost 77-76 at Vanderbilt last night. Andre Walker hit a lay-up with four-point-one-seconds left to give the 24th-ranked Commodores the victory.
Darius Johnson-Odom tried to win it for Marquette, but he tripped over his teammate Vander Blue who was setting up a screen – and the ball bounced away as the final horn sounded.
Vanderbilt started to pull away early in the second half, as a 21-to-6 run put them up by eight. But Marquette responded with an 11-4 run to get within one with six-and-a-half minutes left – and it was close the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles lost despite shooting 56-percent.
Both teams had five scorers in double figures. Jimmy Butler led Marquette with 15. Jeffery Taylor had 19 for Vanderbilt, which improved to 10-2 and has not lost a non-conference home game for over two years. Marquette dropped to 9-4. The Eagles will open Big East Conference play on Saturday at home against West Virginia.
