Bi-State bows before Ellsworth as grapplers win tourney title
No. 2 ranked Ellsworth High School wrestling team gathered 323.5 points, well ahead of anyone else at the Bi-State Classic to win the overall team title and the Division 2 for the first time since 2006.
LA CROSSE - No. 2 ranked Ellsworth High School wrestling team gathered 323.5 points, well ahead of anyone else at the Bi-State Classic to win the overall team title and the Division 2 for the first time since 2006 and only the second time in school history.
The Panthers did not have any individual champions so the team title was fitting. But EHS did have 10 place winners led by three seconds and two thirds.
Falling in their finals matches Thursday evening at the La Crosse Center were Jens Lantz at 103 by a 4-2 decision in overtime against hometown favorite Ben Thorton of La Crosse Central. Roarke Langer lost by 3-1 decision to Wausau West's Nate Hettinga and D.J. Yarwood lost 14-0 to Marshfield's Torin Boemke, the No. 1 seed in the 140-pound weight class.
Winning their third place matches were Noah McLay at 171 by a 3-0 score over Mt. Horeb-Barneveld's Quinn Faust and Parker Hines at 189 by a 9-3 decision over Shell Lake's Caleb Schmidt.
Also placing for the Panthers were Brent Stockwell at 119, eighth; Austin Welch at 135, also eighth; Levi Kuesel at 152, sixth; Tanner Eggenberger at 160, sixth; and Luke Albarado at hevyweight, 12th.
