State Sports Briefs: Badger grapplers second at Midlands

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team placed second in the venerable Midlands Tournament held at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena.

EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team placed second in the venerable Midlands Tournament held at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The two-day tournament concluded Thursday.

UW had two champions, sophomore Tyler Graff at 133 pounds and junior Travis Rutt at 184, and two runner-ups, including defending NCAA champion Andrew Howe, who had his 51-match win streak snapped in a 10-7 finals loss to Nebraska's Jordan Burrough's who was the No. 2 seed in the 167-pound field. Also finishing second was Cole Schmitt at 149 pounds.

Missouri won the Midlands title with 103.5 points to UW's 98.5 points. It matches the Badgers' best showing in the tournament, which was a second place finish in 1987. UW was without two starters, including River Falls' Trevor Brandvold at 197, due to wave of illness that had hit the team before the meet.

Wisconsin wrestles in the National Duals Jan. 8-9 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The United States won its third straight first-round game with a 4-0 shutout of Germany in the World Junior Championships last (Thurs) night in Buffalo New York. Goaltender Jack Campbell stopped all 14 of the German's shots and was replaced by Andy Iles midway through the third period. This victory guarantees the defending champion Americans a spot in the medal round. Team USA, led by UW's John Ramage, plays its final preliminary round game tomorrow night (8pm) against Switzerland.

Twelve days without a game left the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee cold from the field in a 68-44 loss to Wright State. The Panthers shot less than 35 percent in the Horizon League game, trailing 40-29 at half and misfiring even more in the second half. Tony Meier was the only Panther able to find the range, scoring 15 points. The Raiders hit 11-of-18 three-point shots.

Jarvis Williams and Rahmon Fletcher scored 15 points apiece, but that wasn't enough to keep Wisconsin-Green Bay from dropping a 79-56 decision to Detroit. The Phoenix record falls to 6-8 and they have lost their first two Horizon League contests. The Titans hit 57 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line, 23 of 26. The visiting Phoenix only attempted six free throws, hitting four.

The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team will host Detroit tonight in their Horizon League opener. The Phoenix are 11-1, and are favored to win their 13th straight regular season conference title. Also, Green Bay is number-one this week in the mid-major poll from College-Insider-Dot-Com. The Phoenix are coming off a victory over South Dakota on Tuesday night. They’ll play a Detroit team that’s 6-5 with a two-game winning streak. The Titans are coming off a 68-27 romp of Mary-Grove on Monday night.

The UW-Milwaukee women will try to end a six-game losing streak this afternoon, when they host Wright State in their Horizon League opener. The Panthers are 3-8 after losing by seven at Illinois State on Tuesday night. Lindsay Laur had 20 points and 12 rebounds in that contest. UWM will play its first home game since December fourth against a Wright State team that has won five-of-their-last-six. The Raiders went 7-4 in their non-conference schedule. They’re led by LaShawna Thomas, who has 18 points and over six assists per game.

Most of Wisconsin’s small college basketball teams will take a breather for the New Year’s holiday, after competing in tournaments this week. A few games are on tap for this afternoon. The Beloit College men will play Concordia-Texas as a tournament wraps up in Austin Texas. And UW-Oshkosh hosts Marian University of Fond du Lac. On the women’s side, La Crosse plays at Occidental in California. And Beloit is at Loras of Iowa.

Believe it or not, the Milwaukee Bucks are in the thick of the NBA Eastern Conference playoff race despite their 12-and-18 start. The Bucks trail Philadelphia by just percentage points for the eighth-and-final post-season spot. But there’s a lot of basketball to be played before then – and coach Scott Skiles hopes to make up ground as soon as he can. The first thing he’ll need to do is get his players healthy. Injuries have taken a big toll on Milwaukee this season, and Skiles is looking for the Bucks to get healthier sometime this month. In March, Milwaukee will have 10-of-its-15 games at home. And Skiles will to rally by then. The Bucks will open the New Year tomorrow night at home against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Milwaukee Admirals will try to hold onto second place in the American Hockey League’s West Division, when they play at Peoria tonight. The Admirals are one point ahead of third-place Peoria – and they’re three points in back of front-running San Antonio. Milwaukee goal-tender Mark Dekanich has only allowed two goals in his last 103 minutes. The Admirals are 19-10-2-4. Peoria is 20-10-2-1.

In pro soccer, the Milwaukee Wave will play its first game since December 11th when they host the Missouri Comets this afternoon. Milwaukee is 5-0 in the Major Indoor Soccer League – and two of those victories have come against Missouri, 20-9 and 24-11. The Comets are 1-6, giving up an average of 17 points a game. The Wave has only given up just over eight-points per contest, and it leads the league in that department. Milwaukee’s Ryan Mack needs only two points to reach 150 for his career.
