Inauguration for Dayton and new state legislature today
Minnesota News-- Governor-elect Mark Dayton and the other constitutional officers are sworn in today in ceremonies beginning at noon at St. Paul's Landmark Center.
ST. PAUL - Governor-elect Mark Dayton and the other constitutional officers are sworn in today in ceremonies beginning at noon at St. Paul's Landmark Center.
Dayton's inaugural festivities are generally low-key but the ceremony itself will display some pomp and circumstance. Former Vice President Walter Mondale will serve as master of ceremonies and deliver welcoming remarks. After the invocation and national anthem, Attorney General Lori Swanson, Auditor Rebecca Otto and Secretary of State Mark Ritchie take their oaths of office. Following the state song, Lieutenant Governor elect Yvonne Prettner Solon and then Governor-elect Dayton will be sworn in, and Minnesota's new governor will deliver his inaugural address.
Minnesota's new Republican majority assumes its leadership in the state Legislature today. Elected lawmakers in both the state Senate and House take office and elect their new leaders in the Capitol at noon. It's the first time the GOP has controlled both houses in Minnesota since the early 1970s.
Dayton says one of his first orders of business after he's sworn in will be to expand the state's Medicaid program to cover additional low-income Minnesotans. Dayton says he'll sign an executive order Tuesday and do everything possible to cut the anticipated nine-month long process to implement the plan. Outgoing Human Services Commissioner Cal Ludeman says Dayton should not have been surprised that the program change would take time. Ludeman warns if the state doesn't design the system correctly, some people will get coverage when they should not.
