NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Marquette University's men's basketball team will not see Austin Carroll when it plays at Rutgers tomorrow night. The Scarlet Knights said today that Carroll will be out for six weeks with a left knee injury suffered last Sunday in a 16-point loss to Villanova.
Carroll, a freshman guard, will have surgery on Thursday. He has played in all 13 games for Rutgers, averaging about 10 minutes per appearance with around two points and one rebound. Austin Carroll is the son of former Boston Celtics’ coach John Carroll. Rutgers is 0-1 in the Big East and 9-4 overall. They’ll play at Marquette team tomorrow that’s 1-0 in the conference and 10-4 overall.

About a half-dozen schools are said to be interested in getting Reggie Smith, the Marquette freshman guard who decided to transfer to a team where he can play more. Tulane, South Alabama, Fairfield, and La Salle made inquiries to Marquette by last weekend. And the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said Nevada-Las Vegas and TCU are also interested in Smith. But TCU might not be able to sign Smith since it’s joining the Big East in 2012. And the league prohibits transfers from one of its schools to another. Smith played in eight games for Marquette, averaging one-point-four points, one-and-a-half rebounds, and one-point-six assists. He then became ill – and his family approached coach Buzz Williams about a transfer late last month. The earliest Smith would be eligible at another school is late December.
