Morning State Sports Briefs: Marquette now 2-0 in Big East
Wisconsin Sports-- The Marquette men improved to 2-0 in the Big East with a 73-65 victory at Rutgers last night.
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Marquette men improved to 2-0 in the Big East with a 73-65 victory at Rutgers last night.
Junior guard Darius Johnson-Odom tied a career scoring high with 29 points for the Golden Eagles. They were up by seven at the half. Rutgers got within four with about 13 minutes left. But Johnson-Odom scored 12 points in a five-minute stretch as Marquette put the game away. The Eagles shot above 50-percent for the fourth straight game, at 51.2. And Marquette made 20-of-32 free throws to just 4-of-11 for the Scarlet Knights. Jimmy Butler scored 16 points, and Jae Crowder added 15 points and seven rebounds as Marquette improved its overall record to 11-4. James Beatty scored 24 for Rutgers, which fell to 0-2 in the Big East and 9-and-5 overall. Marquette returns to action on Saturday morning at Pittsburgh.

The Marquette University women lost to Notre Dame at home last night, 73-55. Devereaux Peters scored 18 points for the Fighting Irish, which took advantage of 24 Marquette turnovers. Notre Dame, which is ranked 13th, had a nine-point lead at the half and rolled from there. Marquette only shot 34-percent. Tatiyiana McMorris had 15 points for the Golden Eagles, who fell to 0-2 in the Big East and 12-3 overall. They’ll play at Georgetown on Saturday.

Milwaukee Bucks’ guard Brandon Jennings was selected yesterday for the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest on February 19th in Los Angeles. Jennings is out with a broken left foot, but he’s expected to return in mid-January. Jennings is the shortest player on the Slam Dunk roster at 6-1. The marquee player is Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers, who’s had some highlight-reel dunks in his first pro season. Also competing will be Serge Ibaka of Oklahoma City and JaVale McGee of Washington. Nate Robinson won the Slam Dunk contest in each of the last two years.

Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick says he’s healthy and ready-to-go as the Eagles get ready to host the Green Bay Packers in their playoff game on Sunday. Vick suffered a thigh bruise two weeks ago against Minnesota – and he sat out last week’s regular season finale against Dallas. But the Eagles said Vick would not have any restrictions at practice this week – and he said he didn’t feel anything wrong with his leg yesterday. Containing Vick is a major concern for the Packer defense – which will also have to deal with thousand-yard-rusher LeSean McCoy, and speedy receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Vick became the Eagles’ starter after the Packers knocked out Kevin Kolb in the first half of the regular season opener. Vick ran for 103 yards and threw for 175 more, but the Packers hung on to win that game 27-20. Meanwhile, Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy would not say yesterday that defensive end Cullen Jenkins would start against the Eagles. But Jenkins says he’ll play, after sitting out four weeks with a lingering calf injury.

Former Packers’ head coach Mike Sherman is one of 10 finalists for a major college coaching honor. Sherman, who’s now with Texas A&M, is up for the Liberty Mutual Coach-of-the-Year Award. It will be presented on Monday in Phoenix. Sherman led the Aggies to a 9-3 record this season, and they’ll play LSU tomorrow in the Cotton Bowl. Sherman coached in Green Bay from 2000-2005. Among the other candidates for the Liberty Mutual award are Jim Tressel of Ohio State, Mark Dantonio of Michigan State, and Gene Chizik of Auburn.

Appleton native Matt Erickson will become the manager of his hometown minor league baseball team. The 35-year-old Erickson was named yesterday as the new skipper of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the low Class-“A” affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers in the Midwest League. Erickson has been a coach with the Rattlers the last two seasons. He replaces Jeff Isom, who becomes the manager for the Brewers’ high Class-“A” team at Brevard County Florida. Dusty Rhodes, who coached for 23 years at the University of North Florida, will take Erickson’s place on the Rattlers’ coaching staff. Erickson was an infielder for 11 seasons in the minors. His only time in the big leagues came with Milwaukee, when he played in four games for the Brewers in 2004.
