Saturday State Sports Briefs: Packers' Jenkins listed as questionable for Wild Card game

PHILADELPHIA - Green Bay Packers’ defensive end Cullen Jenkins is listed as questionable for Sunday’s NFC Wild Card game at Philadelphia.

Jenkins is expected to play on at least a limited basis, if there’s not a setback at the last minute. His last game was on December fifth against San Francisco, and he was out after that with a lingering calf injury. Packers’ coach Mike McCarthy said Jenkins was limited at practice today – but he had two good days of workouts, so Jenkins was rested in the hopes it will improve his playing chances. Also, three injured players are officially out for the Eagles’ contest – linebacker Frank Zombo, safety Atari Bigby, and fullback Korey Hall. Four other Packers are listed as probable for Sunday – tackle Chad Clifton, linebacker Clay Matthews, defensive end Ryan Pickett, and safety Nick Collins.

University of Wisconsin running back John Clay has reportedly decided to skip his final year of college, and join the NFL Draft this spring. The fourth-year junior told the Racine Journal-Times yesterday he remained undecided about turning pro. But this morning, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel quoted a source as saying he’ll definitely forego his senior year. Clay was scheduled to meet today with the Badger coaching staff to go over his options. He missed all or parts of four games this season with a knee injury. And it’s possible the coaches might tell him that another year in Madison would improve his draft prospects, especially if he can make it through next fall without getting hurt. But Clay is now 23, and he said before the season that his age would be a factor in what he does. Despite missing action, Clay ran for 1,012 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. He was the Big Ten’s offensive player-of-the-year the previous season. Wisconsin still has three experienced running backs – Montee Ball, James White, and Zach Brown. White was the conference freshman-of-the-year. Also, Kenosha Bradford High School rusher Melvin Gordon is due in next fall. And so is Jeff Lewis, a running back from Brookfield Central who red-shirted this past season.
