Morning State Sports Briefs: Badger grapplers third in National Duals

-- The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team placed third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals held at the UNIDome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.

CEDAR FALLS, Ia. - The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team placed third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals held at the UNIDome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.

The Badgers won 42-3 over South Dakota State and 23-16 over American University on Saturday, lost to No. 12 Virginia Tech 20-19 Sunday morning in the semifinals but came back to beat No. 5 ranked Minnesota 19-17 in the third place match. No. 1 ranked Cornell defeated Virginia Tech for first place.

The Badgers had five undefeated wrestlers at the Duals, including redshirt sophomore Tyler Graff (133 lbs.), redshirt sophomore Cole Schmitt (149 lbs.), junior Andrew Howe (165 lbs.), junior Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Derrick Borlie (197 lbs.). UW is 8-1 in dual meets and wrestles Illinois next Sunday at 1 p.m. at UW Field House.

A new report says Dom Capers could be a candidate for a head coaching job elsewhere. The Packers' defensive coordinator reportedly is one of the men that Denver wants to interview about its head coaching vacancy. ESPN reports that Capers is on a long list of potential candidates for the job. ESPN also reports that another coach with ties to Green Bay -- St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur -- is a candidate for head coach in Cleveland. Shurmur is son of former Packers defensive coordinator Fritz Shurmur.

Lin Zastrow scored a career-high 21 points to lead the University of Wisconsin's women basketball team past Minnesota in front of nearly 5,000 fans at the Kohl Center in Madison. The Badgers led by 18 in the second half, but saw their lead whittled to three points before hanging on to win 47-42. Wisconsin didn't score a field goal in the final ten minutes. But they still managed to pick up their fourth straight win over Minnesota.

The Milwaukee Admirals wrapped up an undefeated homestand Sunday. The Admirals beat Hamilton, Ontario 3-2 at the Bradley Center to finish the homestand 4-0. Milwaukee has won seven of its last nine games as it ends the first half of the regular season. The Admirals are within one point of first place in the West Division.

The Baltimore Blast beat the Milwaukee Wave 12-6 Sunday at U.S. Cellular Arena, to earn a split of their weekend series. The two teams are tied for first in the Major Indoor Soccer League. Both are 6-2.
