Panther girls rally to down Spartans 43-38

The Ellsworth High School girls' basketball team was behind almost the entire contest against Somerset Tuesday. But a late surge as the time ticked away in the fourth quarter helped them get past Somerset 43-38.

The Ellsworth High School girls' basketball team was behind almost the entire contest against Somerset Tuesday. But a late surge as the time ticked away in the fourth quarter helped them get past Somerset 43-38.

EHS tied the score at 38-38 and Taylor Murphy's five unanswered points led the Panthers to its first Middle Border Conference win this season.

The Panthers rallied without leading scorer Shannon Campbell, who left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury.

"It was a really gutty performance," said Ellsworth coach Dave Berg, whose team outscored Somerset 15-5 in the final frame.

The Panthers held Ashley Martell, who has committed to the University of Minnesota-Crookston, to just 10 points.

Lydia Kuhl led Ellsworth in scoring with 16 points, he highest total of the the season.

Ellsworth is 4-5 overall, 1-1 Middle Border Conference and will play host to Amery on Thursday.
