Afternoon state sports briefs: Bucks finally back in action
It’s been almost three weeks since the Milwaukee Bucks won back-to-back games. But if they can beat San Antonio tonight, Milwaukee would have its first two-game winning streak since December 23rd.
MILWAUKEE - It’s been almost three weeks since the Milwaukee Bucks won back-to-back games. But if they can beat San Antonio tonight, Milwaukee would have its first two-game winning streak since December 23rd.
The Bucks were supposed to play in Atlanta last night, but that game was postponed due to the intense winter storm in Georgia. Except for the travel, it gave the Bucks’ walking wounded an extra day to recover – including center Andrew Bogut, who missed Saturday night’s win at New Jersey with a viral infection. He’s expected to return tonight, but point guard Brandon Jennings remains out with a broken left foot. He’s due to return in a few days, but Jennings has missed 10 games with his injury. The Bucks will play the final game of their annual two-game set against the Spurs. San Antonio beat Milwaukee 92-to-90 in Texas on December 15th, when Manu Ginobili hit a jumper at the buzzer for the victory. The Spurs are 32-6, with three straight wins after a pair of losses. The Bucks are 14-21.

The UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team will host Loyola tonight. The Phoenix are ranked 23rd in the AP poll with an overall record of 15-1. Green Bay is 4-0 in the Horizon League for the seventh year in a row. And they’ve beaten Loyola 19 straight times at home. The Ramblers are 2-1 in the conference and 8-6 overall. They’ve made at least one three-pointer in 408 straight games dating back to 1996. Green Bay is shooting 80-percent from the free-throw line. That’s the best in the nation. The Phoenix are also third in turnover margin at plus-nine.

Carthage guard Steve Djurickovic has been named the men’s basketball player-of-the-week in the College Conference of Wisconsin and Illinois. It’s the 13th time Djurickovic has won the weekly honor, which sets a new league record. The senior had 27 points, including five three-pointers, in a Carthage win over Illinois Wesleyan. And Djurickovic scored 19 in a loss to Wheaton. He moved into fifth place this week on the CCIW’s all-time career scoring list with 22-hundred-74 points. Among the players he passed on the list was Jack Sikma of Illinois Wesleyan, who went on to star with the Milwaukee Bucks and Seattle Super-Sonics in the NBA.
