Sunday State Sports Briefs: UW men's hockey wins at UMD
Wisconsin Sports-- Minnesota-Duluth tried to come back, but fell a goal short in Wisconsin's 3-2 win Saturday in front of a sold out AMSOIL arena.
DULUTH - Minnesota-Duluth tried to come back, but fell a goal short in Wisconsin's 3-2 win Saturday in front of a sold out AMSOIL arena.
The Badgers earned a split in the weekend series, leading all the way. Justin Schultz and Podge Turnbull scored in the first period, then Craig Smith made is 3-0 in the second. Wisconsin needed all those early goals, becuase the Bulldogs ralled for two scores in the final period. Minnesota-Duluth was dominant as it tried to rally. Wisconsin was held without a shot in the final frame. The Badgers had their seven-game winning streak snapped Friday, but bounced back to improve their record to 15-8-3, including 7-7-2 in the WCHA.

Kyle Kuric's layup with four seconds left gave the Louisville Cardinal a tight 71-70 Big East Conference win over Marquette. Jimmy Butler's miss in the lane meant the Golden Eagles had blown an 18-point lead with less than six minutes to go. Marquette's record falls to 12-6, including 3-2 in conference. Darius Johnson-Odom led Marquette scoring with 16 points. Butler had 15, to go with nine rebounds.

Twenty points by Rahmon Fletcher helped UW-Green Bay wallop Illinois-Chicago and move over the .500 mark at 10-9. Wisconsin-Green Bay took Saturday's Horizon League contest 74-50. The Flames remain winless in conference play at 0-7, while Green Bay improves to 4-3, including an overall record of 10-9. Alec Brown had a double-double for the Phoenix with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The victory was the fourth in a row for UW-Green Bay.
