Twins make deals with several players
Minnesota Sports-- The Minnesota Twins signed Matt Capps and Glen Perkins Tuesday and there's speculation Carl Pavano may re-sign yet as well.
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Matt Capps avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth more than seven-million-dollars with the club yesterday.
Capps also hinted that his teammate Carl Pavano is close to re-signing with the team. While visiting Grand Rapids on the annual Twins Caravan yesterday, Capps told KOZY Radio listeners that he has received a text message from Pavano that there could be an announcement as soon as today that the right-handed Pavano has agreed to terms on a new deal with the Twins. Pavano won 17 games for Minnesota last year. Capps combined for 42 saves with the Twins and Nationals last season.
The Twins and pitcher Glen Perkins avoided salary arbitration when the two agreed to a one-year, $700,000 deal yesterday. The left-handed Perkins will likely be slotted into a bullpen role for Minnesota. Perkins won 12 games with the Twins in 2008, but has struggled some since. He spent most of last year in the minor leagues, but joined the big club late in the season and was used mostly as a reliever. Perkins is a former Golden Gopher pitcher who attended Stillwater Area High School.
