Saturday State Sports Briefs: Bears-Packers meet for only second time in postseason
Wisconsin Sports-- When the Green Bay Packers take on the Chicago Bears tomorrow, they will be meeting in the postseason for the first time in 70 years -- and for only the second time in NFL history.
CHICAGO - When the Green Bay Packers take on the Chicago Bears tomorrow, they will be meeting in the postseason for the first time in 70 years -- and for only the second time in NFL history.
Despite the strong rivalry and the 182 meetings between the two, the only other time they played in post season was in 1941, one week after Pearl Harbor, when the Bears held Hall of Fame receiver Don Hutson to just one catch in a 33-14 win. Sunday's game will decide the championship of the NFC with the winner getting the Halas Trophy, named for the legendary Bears coach. The winner advances to the Super Bowl, where they will be playing for the Lombardi Trophy, named for the legendary Packer coach.

UW-Milwaukee men's basketball team couldn't find the range in a 60-43 loss to Valparaiso. Wisconsin-Milwaukee hit just 28 percent from the floor, missing 19 of 21 three-point attempts. Tony Meier led Milwaukee with 16 points, but the Panthers lost their second game in a row. Valparaiso built a 50-28 lead half-way through the second half and was never threatened.

A late rally by the Phoenix fell short, as Wisconsin-Green Bay dropped an 81-75 decision to Butler. Steve Baker led Green Bay with 20 points, including four three-pointers. The loss ended the Phoenix win streak at four in a row. Green Bay held a 22-13 lead in the first half, but the Bulldogs went on a 15-5 run and never trailed the rest of the way. Green Bay closed to within four points with about two minutes to go and trailed by three with 41 seconds left, but could never catch the Bulldogs.

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin wrestling team topped No. 16 Nebraska 22-15 Friday at the UW Field House in Madison. The Badgers won six matches and started the dual meet with a pinfall from Kalvin York at 157 pounds. Also winning were the Badgers' ranked wrestlers, No. 19 Ben Jordan at 174, No. 4 Travis Rutt at 184, No. 19 Eric Bugenhagen at heavyweight, and No. 3 Tyler Graff at 133. Shawn Perry was also a winner in the final bout at 149 with UW holding a tenuous 19-15 lead. UW is 9-1-1 overall while Nebraska dropes to 9-3. The Badgers' next meet is Jan. 30 at Minnesota.
