Morning State News Briefs: UW women's hoops secures hold on first place
Wisconsin Sports-- The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team is still tied for first place in the Big Ten after winning at Northwestern yesterday, 62-50.
EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team is still tied for first place in the Big Ten after winning at Northwestern yesterday, 62-50.
The Badgers moved into a four-way tie for the conference lead last week – but now, Wisconsin and Penn State are the only leaders at 7-2. Michigan State is third at 6-2. The Badgers ended their game yesterday with a 20-to-5 run. Lin Zastrow and Alyssa Karel scored 17 points each, as Wisconsin improved to 12-9 overall. Meshia Reed scored 13 for Northwestern, which fell to 3-6 in the Big Ten and 14-8 overall. The Badgers will host Michigan State on Thursday night.

The Milwaukee Bucks will play the Clippers in Los Angeles tonight. The Bucks are coming off a 10-point home victory over New Jersey on Saturday night, while the Clippers beat Charlotte at home by 15 on Saturday. Bucks’ center Andrew Bogut says his biggest challenge is to stop LA center Blake Griffin from dunking over him. Bogut calls Griffin a great-and-smart player and a “freak athletically.” Griffin is averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds – and he had 24 points and 10 boards against the Bobcats on Saturday. Griffin is fourth in the NBA in rebounding, and Bogut is fifth. He had 18 boards against the Nets on Saturday night. The Clippers are 8-5 this month, and are 18-28 overall. Milwaukee is 19-26.

The UW-Milwaukee men’s basketball team edged Wright State 54-53 at home yesterday. The Panthers led by 11 with just under eight minutes left – and they withstood a late rally by Wright State. Anthony Hill and Tone Boyle sealed the victory when they each drew an offensive foul in the final minute. Hill led Milwaukee in scoring with 22 points and made 14-of-17 from the free-throw line. Vaughn Duggins scored 26 for Wright State, which lost its 13th straight game in Milwaukee dating back to 1998. The Raiders fell to 7-4 in the Horizon League and 14-9 overall. The Panthers only shot 35-percent, as they improved to 7-5 in the conference and 12-11 overall. Milwaukee’s next game is on Saturday, when it hosts UW-Green Bay.

The UW-Green Bay men went above .500 with an 85-74 home victory over Detroit yesterday. Detroit led by two with 16 minutes left, but an 8-0 run put Green Bay in front for good. The Phoenix had a season-high 20 assists while committing a season-low five turnovers. Rahmon Fletcher led Green Bay with 24 points, including seven in the last five minutes. Ray McCallum scored 15 for Detroit, with dropped to 5-6 in the Horizon League and 11-12 overall. Green Bay is now 6-5 in conference play and 12-11 overall. Their next game is on Saturday at Milwaukee.
