Overnight State Sports Briefs: Many games called off due to weather

Lots of high school sporting events in southern Wisconsin were called off Tuesday as a massive blizzard hit the region.

Forecasters say 12-to-16 more inches of snow are predicted by this time tomorrow, with wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour. That’s on top of the 5-to-7 inches of snow that fell Monday and Tuesday morning in much of the south. A number of schools have decided to close early this afternoon, which means their athletic events are also off for tonight. That includes Milwaukee, where they’ve already announced that the city’s public schools will be closed tomorrow. Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties are expected to be hit the hardest by the blizzard.

Milwaukee Bucks’ center Andrew Bogut had an MRI today on his right knee. It was injured in the fourth quarter of last night’s seven-point loss to the Clippers in Los Angeles. Bogut collided with LA guard Randy Foye while going after a loose ball, and he limped off the floor. X-rays did not show anything broken. Bogut said he felt some swelling immediately, and he was hoping it would be just a knee bruise that would only sideline him for a day or two. It’s just the latest medical problem for the seven-foot Bogut. He suffered from a viral infection for a few weeks after he got scratched on the arm during a game in December. And he missed five contests in late November with a bad back – just as he was trying to get over season-ending arm-and-wrist injuries from last April. The Bucks play at Phoenix tomorrow night.

The Marquette University women’s basketball team has made the national AP Top-25 for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles are at No. 23. Marquette is 17-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big East, and they’re coming off an overtime victory at Pittsburgh last Saturday. Tatiyiana McMorris scored a career-high 22 points in that contest, and she made the Big East’s weekly Honor Roll for her performance. She leads the Eagles in scoring in conference games with just over 15 points on average.

UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee's men's basketball teams will both play in next month’s ESPN Bracket Buster series – but neither school will have its game on television. Green Bay will play at Southern Illinois, and Milwaukee will be on the road against Buffalo. Those games will be held the weekend of February 18th-through-20th, but the dates-and-times have not been set. Green Bay is 12-11 overall, and will face a Southern Illinois squad that’s 10-12. UW-Milwaukee is 12-11, and will play a Buffalo team that’s 13-6. This is the ninth year of the Bracket Buster event. It’s designed to showcase the nation’s top mid-major teams, and to pit potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls against each other.

Celeste Hoewisch of UW-Green Bay has been named the Horizon League women’s basketball player-of-the-week. Hoewisch, a senior guard, scored 19-of-her-23 points in the second half when the Phoenix defeated Butler. And she scored 17 points, all but three in the second half, in Green Bay’s win over Valparaiso. Vaughn Duggins of Wright State is the Horizon League men’s player-of-the-week. He averaged 22-and-a-half points as the Raiders split a pair of games against Green Bay and Milwaukee.

The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team moved up one place to seventh in this week’s poll from U..S College Hockey Online. The Badgers are 19-8-3 overall, after a two-game road sweep at Michigan Tech last weekend. Wisconsin has won five straight. Boston College is the new Number-one, as Yale dropped from first-to-third.

The Badgers still lead the College On-line women’s poll, after beating-and-tying Minnesota last weekend in Madison. Wisconsin is now 24-2-2. Cornell and Boston University remain second-and-third.

In Division-Three, Saint Norbert is still second in the men’s poll, behind Oswego of New York. The Green Knights are 17-3-1. The Milwaukee School of Engineering is tied for 10th with Manhattanville. UW-Superior and Eau Claire also received votes.

In the D-Three women’s poll, River Falls is still second at 16-0-2. Superior remains 10th. Eau Claire and Concordia-Mequon received votes. The Rochester Institute of Technology is still the women’s number-one.

Jon Mays of Lawrence University in Appleton has been named the Midwest Conference men’s basketball player-of-the-week. Mays, a senior guard, scored a career-high 38 points in Lawrence’s 20-point win over Carroll last weekend. Mays hit 12-of-16 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. And he eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Mays also scored a team-high 14 points in a loss to Saint Norbert last week. Guard Sam Schuring of Lake Forest is the league’s honored women’s player.

Josh Stein of Maranatha Baptist is the men’s basketball player-of-the-week in the Northern Athletics Conference. Stein, a senior forward, averaged 20 points and 18 rebounds in three games last week. And his 28 boards against Northland set a new league single-game record. Stein also leads the NAC in double-doubles with 15 this season. Marche Smith of Concordia-Chicago is the women’s player-of-the-week. The NAC also named Kevin Diederich of Milwaukee School of Engineering as the men’s indoor track athlete-of-the-week. The junior won the 55-meter hurdles at the Tadd Metzger Invitational at Carthage last weekend.
