Wisconsin made 219-and-a-half million pounds of cheese during the month – eight-tenths of a percent less than the previous December. The Badger State is still the nation’s top cheese-maker, but second-place California is gaining ground. Its production rose eight-point-one percent to 190-million pounds.
California made almost 15-percent more Italian cheeses than the previous year, while Wisconsin had increases of no more than one-point-three percent for any type of cheese. For the year as a whole, total U.S. cheese production was almost 10-and-a-half billion pounds, up three-point-three percent from 2009.
