Evening Sports Briefs: UWM's Crogan named Horizon League Track and Field Athlete of the Week

-- Ben Crogan of UW-Milwaukee is the men’s indoor field athlete-of-the-week in the Horizon League.

MILWAUKEE - Ben Crogan of UW-Milwaukee is the men’s indoor field athlete-of-the-week in the Horizon League.

Crogan, a junior, finished third in the heptathlon at the Wisconsin Badger Elite meet. As part of the heptathlon, Crogan set a new UWM record in the pole vault with a height of 16-feet, eight-and-three-quarter inches.

In Division-Two college basketball, UW-Parkside has moved its men’s-and-women’s home games against Lewis University from tomorrow to Friday night. The Kenosha campus is closed today due to the intense blizzard in southeast Wisconsin. The Parkside men are 4-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and 7-13 overall with a three-game losing streak. The Parkside women are 10-3 in league play, and 16-5 overall.

Derek Carrier of Beloit College and Lexie Schaffer of Ripon have been named the men’s-and-women’s field athletes-of-the-week in the Midwest Conference. Carrier, a junior, took third place in the long jump and triple jump at the University of Chicago Duals last weekend. Schaffer, a freshman, won the high jump at the Tadd Metzger Invitational with a season-high leap of five-feet, one-and-three-quarter inches.

Steven Mathe and Ember McCoy, both of Carthage, are the men’s-and-women’s swimmers-of-the-week in the CCIW. Mathe, a sophomore, won the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle events at the Wisconsin Private College Championships. McCoy, a freshman, won the 500 freestyle at the same event. And she had personal bests in the both the 500 and her leg of the 200 freestyle relay.
